What is changing at Cancún Airport

The automated gates—officially called Filtros Migratorios Autónomos (FMA)—scan an eligible electronic passport and use a facial photograph to verify the traveler. When the process is approved, the machine issues a ticket with a QR code and digital entry record.

The expansion is meant to increase immigration capacity, not promise a fixed wait time. Flight bunching, staffing, secondary inspection and the number of eligible travelers can still affect the line.

Who can use the e-gates

According to Mexico's National Migration Institute, a traveler must meet all of the applicable requirements, including:

• Be 18 or older.
• Travel for tourism only.
• Carry an ordinary electronic passport with more than 180 days of validity.
• Hold a passport from an eligible nationality. The current official list includes the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and many European and Asia-Pacific countries.
• Not be traveling with a minor through the automated gate.

Who should not use them

Do not use the tourist e-gates when entering under a different immigration status. The official eligibility guidance excludes travelers entering with temporary or permanent Mexican residency, student or work-related visas, humanitarian or family-unity status, non-ordinary passports, crew status, or another purpose besides tourism.

When in doubt, use the staffed immigration line and tell the officer the status under which you are entering.

How the process works

1. Follow the signs for the automated immigration gates.
2. Open the passport to the photo and personal-information page.
3. Place it on the scanner and wait for the gate to open.
4. Enter the enclosed area for the facial photograph and automated checks.
5. Collect the printed ticket after approval.
6. Scan the ticket's QR code to download the digital Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMMd).

The automated passport-control step can be much faster than a staffed line for an eligible traveler, but total time from aircraft door to airport exit will still vary.

Keep the printed ticket

The ticket is not disposable. It contains the unique record of entry through the automated gate. Scan the QR code, download the digital FMM and keep the ticket with your passport until you leave Mexico. Immigration officials may request the entry record at departure.

What can still slow the arrival

Faster immigration does not mean the complete airport process is finished. Travelers may still wait for:

• Checked baggage
• Customs processing or inspection
• A secondary immigration review
• The correct transportation meeting point
• Heavy traffic leaving the airport

Keep the first evening flexible and avoid a tight, nonrefundable activity immediately after landing.

A smoother arrival plan

• Keep your passport, hotel address and return or onward travel details accessible.
• Use the e-gates only when you clearly meet the eligibility rules.
• Travel with carry-on luggage when practical.
• Book transportation before arrival and save the provider's meeting instructions offline.
• In the public arrivals hall, follow the directions from your confirmed provider rather than accepting an unsolicited sales offer.
• Keep the ticket and digital FMM available through departure.

Cancún Airport's e-gate expansion is a meaningful improvement for eligible adult tourists. It can shorten the immigration step, especially when several international flights arrive together. It does not guarantee that every traveler will clear the entire airport in minutes, but it removes one major source of uncertainty for people who qualify.
