Current update — October 5, 2026

A new report from Cancún Airport says some international travelers are being asked to pay as much as 550 pesos per person for Visitax at Terminal 2.

That figure conflicts with the state government's December 2025 statement that the 2026 rate would remain 285 pesos.

The difference is significant enough that travelers are asking a simple question: What is the actual Visitax amount?

At the moment, we have two verified pieces of information:

  • Quintana Roo officially said the 2026 Visitax rate would remain 285 pesos.
  • Por Esto! reported on October 5, 2026 that some Terminal 2 travelers were being charged up to 550 pesos at airport payment modules.

We have not found an official state notice explaining a new 550-peso Visitax rate.

What is Visitax?

Visitax is a Quintana Roo state charge for foreign tourists. The official state payment portal says it is mandatory for foreign visitors and applies throughout Quintana Roo.

That includes travelers visiting destinations such as:

  • Cancún
  • Playa del Carmen
  • Tulum
  • Cozumel
  • Isla Mujeres
  • Puerto Morelos
  • Riviera Maya

The payment is separate from hotel environmental or sanitation fees.

So is Visitax 285 pesos or 550 pesos?

The most defensible answer today is:

The state publicly said the 2026 Visitax rate would remain 285 pesos, but travelers are reporting higher amounts at airport payment modules.

Until the state publishes a clear explanation for the difference, travelers should treat any higher amount as something that deserves clarification rather than assuming the official tax itself doubled.

Where should you pay?

The safest starting point is the official Quintana Roo Visitax portal:

https://www.visitax.gob.mx/

The official portal allows travelers to make the payment and recover a receipt.

If you are approached at an airport module:

  1. ask what portion is the Visitax itself
  2. ask whether any additional service or processing charge is included
  3. ask for a receipt showing the amount
  4. compare the total with the current official state portal before paying

What should travelers do at Cancún Airport?

If you are departing from Cancún International Airport and have not yet paid Visitax:

  • check the official Visitax portal before going to the airport
  • save a screenshot of the current amount
  • save the payment receipt on your phone
  • keep the receipt available until you leave Quintana Roo
  • if you are quoted a higher amount at the airport, ask what the difference represents

This is especially useful if you are traveling through Terminal 2, where today's report says the higher charges are being encountered.

Is Visitax mandatory?

According to the official Quintana Roo Visitax portal, yes. It states that the charge is mandatory for foreign tourists under state law.

The current confusion is not about whether Visitax exists. It is about what travelers are actually being charged and why some airport totals appear higher than the state's announced rate.

Is this the same as the hotel environmental tax?

No.

Visitax is a state charge for foreign visitors. Hotels may also collect separate environmental, sanitation, or local fees depending on the destination and property.

A hotel fee does not automatically mean Visitax has already been paid.

Why this matters

A difference of 265 pesos may not ruin a vacation, but unclear charges create exactly the kind of airport frustration travelers should not have to sort out while trying to catch a flight.

The bigger issue is transparency.

If the official Visitax rate changed, travelers should be able to see that clearly on an official government source. If the difference is a service or collection fee, that should also be clearly disclosed before payment.

What The Accidental Gringo is watching

We are treating this as a living travel update, not a one-day news story.

We will update this page when:

  • Quintana Roo publishes a new official Visitax amount
  • SATQ explains the airport pricing difference
  • airport payment procedures change
  • the official payment portal changes
  • credible new traveler reports provide useful evidence

That means this URL will stay current rather than being abandoned as an outdated October 2026 news article.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official Visitax website?

The official Quintana Roo portal is:

https://www.visitax.gob.mx/

Should I pay Visitax before arriving at the airport?

Paying through the official portal before departure can reduce confusion at the airport because you can save the receipt in advance.

Why are some travelers being charged 550 pesos?

As of October 5, 2026, we have not found an official state explanation confirming that the Visitax itself increased to 550 pesos. Por Esto! reported travelers being charged up to that amount at Terminal 2.

Does Visitax apply only in Cancún?

No. The official state portal says the payment applies to foreign tourists visiting Quintana Roo.
