Janal Pixan Cancún 2026: Dates, Maritime Procession, Catrina Parade & Free Transport
Cancún's Janal Pixan celebration runs October 30-November 2 with a Puerto Juárez maritime procession, Catrina parade, Las Palapas events and free transport from Tajamar and El Crucero.

If you will be in Cancún over Day of the Dead weekend, one of the city's biggest public cultural events is happening outside the Hotel Zone.
Janal Pixan 2026 runs from Friday, October 30 through Monday, November 2, with activities in Puerto Juárez, Parque de Las Palapas and the municipal cemeteries. For most travelers, the biggest planning date is Friday, October 30, when the city has scheduled the traditional maritime procession in Puerto Juárez followed by the Catrina and Catrín parade.
Quick look: the dates travelers need
- Friday, October 30, 4:30 PM: Maritime procession from the pier on Calle 45 in Puerto Juárez.
- Friday, October 30, 6:00 PM: Artistic programming begins at the Concha Acústica in Puerto Juárez.
- Friday, October 30, 6:30 PM: Catrina and Catrín parade with the La Caribeña wind orchestra.
- October 30-November 2: Four nights of Janal Pixan programming in Puerto Juárez, including live music, altars, food, crafts and cultural performances.
- Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1, 7:00 PM: Cena de Ánimas programming at Parque de Las Palapas.
- Free transport: Municipal transport to Puerto Juárez is scheduled from Malecón Tajamar and El Crucero beginning at 5:00 PM during the festivities.
The city says more than 50 local artists are involved, along with five municipal artistic companies. The official program also names El Camino de los Abuelos among the featured elements. Separate municipal contest information lists prizes of up to MX$25,000 for Catrina/Catrín and altar competitions. The city is projecting around 200,000 visitors, compared with roughly 140,000 in the prior edition.
What is Janal Pixan?
Janal Pixan is part of the Maya and Yucatecan tradition of honoring and remembering the dead around the end of October and beginning of November.
In Cancún, the municipal celebration combines that tradition with public cultural programming: altars, music, dance, regional food, crafts, Catrina competitions and a maritime procession in Puerto Juárez.
This is not a resort show built only for tourists. It is a local public celebration that visitors can attend respectfully.
The maritime procession in Puerto Juárez
The most distinctive part of Cancún's program is the maritime procession on Friday, October 30 at 4:30 PM. The municipality places the starting point at the pier on Calle 45 in Puerto Juárez.
If this is the part you most want to see, do not plan to arrive at 4:25 PM. The city is projecting heavy attendance across the festival, and Puerto Juárez has limited road space compared with the Hotel Zone. Give yourself time to reach the area, find the correct viewing point and account for crowding.
Puerto Juárez is also the mainland ferry area many travelers use for Isla Mujeres. If you are unfamiliar with that part of Cancún, our Cancún to Isla Mujeres Ferry Guide explains the Puerto Juárez area and mainland transportation context. The Janal Pixan procession itself is a separate event, so use the city's current event directions rather than assuming your normal ferry drop-off is the exact viewing point.
Catrina parade at 6:30 PM
After the maritime procession, the city has scheduled the Catrina and Catrín parade at 6:30 PM on October 30. The parade is set to be accompanied by the municipal wind orchestra La Caribeña.
The Concha Acústica program begins at 6:00 PM, with local music, dance and other performances continuing through the evening.
For a first-time visitor, the simplest plan is to treat the maritime procession and parade as one Puerto Juárez evening rather than trying to leave and return between them.
Free transportation: what is confirmed
The municipality says free transportation to Puerto Juárez will be available during the festivities. The announced departure points are Malecón Tajamar and El Crucero.
Service is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM.
Important: that 5:00 PM start is after the maritime procession begins at 4:30 PM. If seeing the procession is your priority, do not rely on the announced free transport start to get you there in time; arrange earlier transportation and use the municipal service later if it works for you.
The public announcement does not give enough detail to promise a specific return frequency or final departure time. Check the latest municipal information on the day you go and have a backup plan for getting back to your hotel.
Cena de Ánimas at Parque de Las Palapas
The celebration is not limited to Puerto Juárez. On October 31 and November 1, the city has announced Cena de Ánimas programming at Parque de Las Palapas beginning at 7:00 PM.
The program includes a food pavilion, altars and local artistic performances. Las Palapas is in downtown Cancún, so this can be an easier option for travelers who want to experience part of the celebration without making the full Puerto Juárez evening their priority.

How I would plan Friday, October 30
- Eat early and leave extra travel time.
- Head toward Puerto Juárez well before 4:30 PM.
- If you want the 4:30 PM procession, arrange transportation that gets you there before it starts; the announced free municipal service begins at 5:00 PM.
- Stay for the 6:30 PM Catrina parade and evening programming.
- Confirm your return transportation before the night gets crowded.
If you are staying in the Hotel Zone, do not judge the trip by distance alone. Friday traffic plus event crowds can matter more than the map suggests.
What travelers should verify the same day
Festival schedules can change. Before leaving your hotel, recheck:
- The municipality's Janal Pixan announcements.
- The exact Puerto Juárez meeting or viewing point.
- Free-transport operating details.
- Your return transportation.
- Weather and any local traffic restrictions.
Do not assume a social-media flyer from an earlier year has the 2026 schedule.
Bottom line
For travelers in Cancún between October 30 and November 2, Janal Pixan is one of the strongest opportunities this week to see a major local cultural celebration beyond the resort corridor.
The October 30 maritime procession and Catrina parade in Puerto Juárez are the headline events. The Las Palapas Cena de Ánimas on October 31 and November 1 gives visitors another downtown option, and the city's free transportation can make Puerto Juárez easier to reach after it begins operating.
Go for the culture, expect crowds, and verify the final transport and event details the same day.
