Cancún MOBI Is Expanding: 100 New Hybrid Buses and 4 New Routes
Cancún's MOBI system is growing from 38 to 138 buses, with four new routes rolling out between October and December 2026.

Cancún's MOBI bus system is getting much bigger
Cancún's relatively new MOBI bus system is moving into its next major phase.
On October 5, the Quintana Roo government presented 100 additional hybrid Yutong buses and announced four new routes for Cancún. When the rollout is complete, MOBI is expected to operate 138 buses across six routes, up from the 38 buses and two Route 27 branches operating now.
For travelers, this matters because MOBI is no longer just a small test route. The growing network is being designed to connect more of Cancún with downtown, major shopping areas, the ADO bus terminal and the Hotel Zone.
Official plans reference places including Plaza Las Américas, Puerto Cancún, Plaza Kukulkán, La Isla, Plaza Caracol, Playa Tortugas and Parque KM 0.
The four new MOBI routes
The four routes announced are:
- Route 17
- Villas del Mar 3 – Puente Nichupté
- Villas del Mar 3 – KM 0
- La Rehoyada – Zona Hotelera
The routes will not all start at once. The government is planning a phased rollout through early December.
Current rollout schedule
October 19–26: Route 17 — introductory free-service period
November 2–9: Villas del Mar 3 – Puente Nichupté — introductory free-service period
November 16–23: Villas del Mar 3 – KM 0 — introductory free-service period
November 30–December 7: La Rehoyada – Zona Hotelera — introductory free-service period
Those dates are especially useful if you will be in Cancún during the rollout, because the system may still be adjusting stops, frequencies and operating patterns during the introductory periods.
I recently rode MOBI myself
This expansion caught my attention because I had already gone out and tested MOBI before the announcement.
I boarded at Plaza Las Américas and rode toward the Hotel Zone. The bus was modern, air-conditioned and low-floor, and contactless payment worked immediately. The ride into the Coco Bongo area took less than 15 minutes during my trip.
I also filmed the ride so travelers can see what the bus, boarding process and interior actually look like. I will keep this guide updated as the new routes launch.

What are the new MOBI buses like?
According to the state government, the new Yutong buses use hybrid electric/combustion technology and include:
- air conditioning
- universal-access features
- five security cameras
- GPS
- Wi-Fi
- USB charging
- bicycle racks
- onboard screens
- electronic payment validators
The buses will also be monitored in real time and connected with Quintana Roo's C5 security system.
Why this matters for visitors
MOBI is primarily a public-transit project for Cancún residents, but the expansion overlaps heavily with places travelers use.
The announced network includes connections involving downtown Cancún, ADO, Plaza Las Américas, Puerto Cancún and the Hotel Zone. That makes MOBI increasingly relevant for visitors staying downtown, moving between downtown and the beach area, or trying to reach shopping and transportation hubs without taking a taxi for every trip.
There is one important caution: the four new routes are still being introduced. Do not assume every announced route is operating yet simply because the buses have been presented.
We will update this guide as the routes actually enter service and we can verify stops, frequencies, payment details and how useful each one is for travelers.
What about the fare?
I am deliberately not giving a definitive fare for the expanded network yet.
During my recent ride, the amount charged to my card did not exactly match the posted fare information I had seen. Until the current payment rules and any card/app differences are verified cleanly, I would rather leave the fare out than give travelers a number that may be wrong.
MOBI is becoming a real part of Cancún transportation
The scale of this announcement is what makes it significant.
Officials estimate that the four new routes could eventually serve more than 322,000 people and approximately 80,000 passenger trips per day. The government also projects that MOBI buses will represent about 23% of Cancún's public-bus fleet once the expansion is complete.
For travelers, the practical takeaway is simpler:
Cancún's bus system is changing quickly.
MOBI started small. By the end of 2026, it is scheduled to have six routes and 138 buses—and some of those new connections run directly through the parts of Cancún visitors use most.
We will keep testing it ourselves as the network expands.
