How to Get Around Cozumel: Taxi, Rental Car, Scooter or Tour

Cozumel is easy to understand geographically but not entirely walkable. San Miguel works on foot; beaches, reef marinas and the east side usually require transportation.

Walking

Central San Miguel is the easiest part of Cozumel to explore on foot.

Walking works for the passenger-ferry area, waterfront, restaurants and nearby streets. It does not solve transportation to southern beach clubs, many dive departures or the east side.

Taxis

Taxis are useful for:

Ferry terminal to hotel
Cruise pier to town
Beach clubs
Dive marinas
One-way restaurant trips

Before leaving, confirm the fare or current posted zone information. Rates and procedures can change.

For a remote stop, decide how you will get back before the taxi leaves.

Rental cars

A car makes the most sense when your goal is an independent island drive with several stops.

Before renting, understand insurance, fuel policy, parking, road restrictions and what happens if the vehicle has a problem away from town.

Do not leave valuables visible inside a parked vehicle.

Scooters

Scooters provide mobility but expose riders directly to traffic, road surfaces, rain and wind.

Choose one only if you already have appropriate riding experience and understand the rental terms. A vacation is not the ideal time to learn basic motorcycle control.

Wear the required protective equipment and follow local law.

Organized tours and private drivers

A driver or organized route can be the easiest option for groups, first-time visitors and cruise passengers.

The advantage is not simply transportation. It is having one plan for pickup, stops and return.

Ask whether entrance fees, waiting time and meals are included.

East-side transportation

The east side feels much quieter than San Miguel, but services are more limited.

Do not start an east-side trip without enough fuel, water and a return plan. Mobile service and business hours should not be assumed.

Drinking and driving

If alcohol is part of the day, use a taxi, driver or tour instead of driving or riding a scooter.

Bottom line

Cozumel transportation becomes simple once you decide what kind of day you are having.

Town day: walk plus taxi.

One beach or reef departure: taxi.

Independent island loop: car.

Relaxed multi-stop day without navigation: driver or tour.
