1. Isla Mujeres: easiest island option from Cancun

For a traveler already in Cancun, Isla Mujeres is one of the simplest ways to change destinations without renting a car. Reach the passenger ferry, cross to the island, and much of Centro and Playa Norte can be handled on foot.

You do not need a golf cart if your trip is mainly Playa Norte, Centro, restaurants and the ferry area. A cart or taxi becomes more useful when Punta Sur and the south end are important.

2. Puerto Morelos: best small mainland base without a car

Puerto Morelos is compact on the beachside. Once you are in the traditional town, the plaza, beach, pier and many restaurants are close enough together that daily life does not require a vehicle.

That makes it especially useful for travelers who want a smaller place than Cancun or Playa del Carmen but still want restaurants, reef trips and an easy beach routine.

The limitation is the Ruta de los Cenotes and broader Riviera Maya. Those trips require a taxi, transfer, tour or other transportation plan.

3. Playa del Carmen: best transportation hub

If your priority is making several day trips without driving, Playa del Carmen deserves serious consideration. Its central location and transportation connections make it easier to move north and south along the Riviera Maya than from many quieter beach communities.

The tradeoff is obvious: Playa is larger, busier and more urban than Puerto Morelos or Akumal. That can be a benefit if restaurants, nightlife and transportation choice matter more than a small-town atmosphere.

Best fit: independent travelers who want to explore several destinations without keeping a rental car.

4. Akumal: possible without a car, but choose your location carefully

Akumal is different. The famous experiences are nature-based—turtles, beaches, Yal-Ku and nearby cenotes—but the area is more spread out than the center of Isla Mujeres or Puerto Morelos.

A no-car Akumal trip works best when you stay near the part of Akumal you actually plan to use and accept that some outings may require taxis or arranged transportation.

Holbox is the most literal no-car destination on this list. Once on the island, visitors move around on foot, bicycles and golf-cart taxis.

But from Cancun, you still have to reach Chiquila and then take the passenger ferry. That makes Holbox a better choice when the island itself is the destination, not when your only goal is avoiding a rental car.

6. Valladolid: easy once you are there

For a simple family beach stay, I would start with Isla Mujeres or Puerto Morelos. Both let you reduce daily transportation once you are settled.

Akumal can also work very well, especially for nature-focused families, but accommodation location matters more.

If you plan to take several regional trips, Playa del Carmen is the strongest transportation base on this list.

No. A rental car is useful when you want to combine remote cenotes, archaeological sites and several dispersed stops on your own schedule. It is not automatically necessary for a good trip.

The mistake is choosing a spread-out itinerary and then trying to force it into a no-car vacation. If you choose a base that matches the trip you actually want, walking, ferries, buses, taxis and occasional transfers can be enough.
