Is San Bernardino de Siena Open in Valladolid? September 2026 Lightning Strike Update
A lightning strike temporarily closed the main church interior at San Bernardino de Siena in Valladolid. Here’s what is open, what travelers can still visit, and what remains unconfirmed as of September 21, 2026.
Updated September 21, 2026. If San Bernardino de Siena is on your Valladolid itinerary this week, there is one important change to know before you walk down the Calzada de los Frailes.
A lightning strike hit the historic Church of San Bernardino de Siena on the afternoon of Saturday, September 19. Local authorities temporarily suspended access and religious activities inside the main church while inspections continue.
The good news: after an inspection on Sunday, September 20, Protección Civil reported no indication that the building is at risk of collapse. Local reports describe the visible damage as minor or superficial, but the main church interior remains closed as a precaution while additional reviews are completed.

Is San Bernardino de Siena open right now?
The main church interior is temporarily closed.
According to local reporting citing the Valladolid municipal government and Protección Civil, religious services and activities inside the main temple were suspended after the strike. Masses have been moved to the side corridors of the former convent.
I have not found a confirmed reopening time for the church interior as of the morning of September 21.
Is the building seriously damaged?
The first official inspection is reassuring.
Protección Civil inspected the historic building on September 20 and reported no signs suggesting a risk of collapse. Local news reports describe the damage as minor and superficial.
That does not mean the building has been fully cleared for normal use. The closure remains a preventive measure while the corresponding technical inspections are completed.
Can you still visit Barrio de Sisal and the Calzada de los Frailes?
Yes — there is no indication that you should remove the Calzada de los Frailes or Barrio de Sisal from your Valladolid plans.
The current restriction being reported concerns access and activities inside the main church. The Calzada, the surrounding neighborhood and the exterior view of the ex-convent remain part of the normal public area.
If the church interior was the main reason for your visit, check again the same day before going. If you were planning to walk the Calzada, see the exterior architecture and spend time around Sisal, the area is still worth visiting.
What about the San Bernardino video mapping?
This is the part I would verify before making a special trip tonight.
Valladolid tourism listings still show the Noches de la Heroica Valladolid video-mapping presentation at the ex-convent. However, those listings have not yet clearly addressed whether the September 19 lightning strike changes the show schedule.
Because the projection uses the exterior façade, the church-interior closure does not automatically mean the show is cancelled. But until the city or event organizer specifically reconfirms the post-strike schedule, I would treat tonight’s presentation as check-before-you-go.
Are masses still being held?
Yes, but not inside the main church.
Local reports say masses are being held in the side corridors of the ex-convent while the principal temple remains closed.
What happened?
A lightning strike hit the Church of San Bernardino de Siena during storms on Saturday afternoon, September 19. The Valladolid municipal government ordered the temporary restriction after a recommendation from Protección Civil.
An inspection followed on Sunday. Authorities found no signs of imminent structural collapse, but kept the preventive closure in place for further assessment.
Should travelers change their Valladolid plans?
Not the whole day.
San Bernardino is one of Valladolid’s most important historic stops, but the experience around it is much larger than the church interior. The walk down Calzada de los Frailes, Barrio de Sisal and the exterior of the ex-convent are still worthwhile.
If you only have one day in Valladolid, I would keep the stop in your route but allow some flexibility. If the interior remains closed, use that time for the Calzada, Cenote Zací, the main plaza or another nearby stop.
When will San Bernardino fully reopen?
There is no confirmed reopening date yet.
