Cancún’s Missing Tourists: Why Spirit Is Only Part of the Story

Cancún's airport traffic has declined. Spirit matters, but other airline cuts and changing visitor markets make the story more complex.

Cancún Airport recorded 20,882,658 passenger movements from January through September 2026, versus 22,196,857 in 2025: a decline of 1,314,199 movements (5.9%). These are arriving and departing passenger movements, not 1.3 million distinct tourists.

Why Spirit matters—but cannot explain everything

Spirit ceased operations on May 2, 2026. AG calculations from ASUR's April and September passenger reports show that Cancún's international traffic declined 0.7% in January–April year over year, then 12.8% in May–September. Its domestic traffic declined 6.8% and 3.3%, respectively; total traffic fell 2.4% and 9.2%. The May–September comparison subtracts the first four months from the nine-month year-to-date totals. Timing is not proof of causation, and Cancún was already losing traffic before Spirit shut down.

Anáhuac Cancún's STARC study identified 561,311 fewer scheduled U.S. seats to Cancún, Cozumel and Tulum *combined* for July–August 2026 than a year earlier. Spirit's missing 195,138 seats represented about 34.8% of this regional summer net reduction. American and United also reduced capacity. That percentage is not Spirit's share of Cancún's lost tourists; it measures scheduled seats for three airports over two months, not completed passenger trips. Some travelers may have booked other airlines.

Did Cancún lose affordable ways to get there?

Ultra-low-cost carriers can pressure fares at the lowest-price end of the market. Historical research on the 'Spirit Effect' observed such competition in U.S. aviation, but did not measure Cancún fares in 2026. Replacing a route's seats is not necessarily the same as replacing its cheapest practical flight options. For a family buying four tickets, a change in flight availability, baggage costs and schedules can alter the economics of an entire vacation.

This remains a hypothesis, not a measured cause. We have not established equivalent historical fares or all-in vacation prices proving that Cancún has become more expensive than other Caribbean destinations. A low-cost airline passenger also is not necessarily a low-spending visitor: money saved on flights can be spent at the destination.

Beyond one airline: the source-market question

Mexico's preliminary January–July data show foreign-tourist air entries by U.S. residents down 10% year over year, while Canadian resident entries rose 7.4%. These are national entry events, not Cancún-only counts or unique people. This makes U.S.-market weakness an important line of investigation. Airlines can cut service when bookings soften, and reduced availability can then discourage additional bookings. Published totals alone cannot isolate the size of either effect.

Are rival Caribbean destinations taking Cancún's visitors?

Curaçao reported approximately 10% growth in overnight visitors for January–August 2026. AG calculations based on its tourist board report indicate increased U.S. arrivals accounted for about 18% of its net growth. Growth in one market does not establish that tourists transferred from Cancún. San Juan airport recorded a 2.9% passenger decline for January–September. These different destinations and statistics do not form a comparable top-ten ranking.

What travelers and local businesses should watch

Before booking, compare complete holiday costs—not an advertised fare alone—including flights, baggage, lodging, transfers and meals. Our Cancún trip budget guide: https://theaccidentalgringo.com/articles/cancun-trip-budget-planner/ and airport transport comparison: https://theaccidentalgringo.com/articles/cancun-airport-transportation-comparison/ provide useful starting points.

For businesses, airline announcements are not the same as actual visitors. Watch whether comparable service returns on affected routes and whether it translates into bookings, room nights and spending.

The central question: Can Cancún restore not only airline capacity but affordable, practical access to a complete vacation? Spirit is part of the story, not all of it.
